Hello! It has been too darn long since a Season Announcement Wednesday so it excites me to be back and gearing up to highlight the beautiful seasons your local theatre companies are producing. This week’s highlight is one of a company that I am dying to work with some day. Every time I walk on campus and see a production here I am struck with inspiration and admiration in the talent my peers possess. So here is the 2013/2014 season of Fresno State University!

Shows/Dates: The First Breeze of Summer (October 4-12); Our Town (November 1-9); Clybourne Park (December 6-14); Two Absurdist One-Acts (March 14, 2014 - March 22, 2014); Othello (May 2-10)

Description: Fresno State University has had an increasingly successful theatre program over the past few decades. They are never scared to try new works, bold works, and award-winning works. In addition to the titles listed above they also have dance shows and theatre for young audiences’ performances. I have had the pleasure of seeing The Laramie Project, The Glass Menagerie, Assassins (http://brothermarc7theatre.tumblr.com/post/22609248390/assassins-show-256), Wonder of the World (http://brothermarc7theatre.tumblr.com/post/33393985549/wonder-of-the-world-show-297), Sty of the Blind Pig (http://brothermarc7theatre.tumblr.com/post/35582268945/sty-of-the-blind-pig-show-302), Undergrad http://brothermarc7theatre.tumblr.com/post/35927170910/undergrad-show-304), The Elephant Man (http://brothermarc7theatre.tumblr.com/post/37844313743/the-elephant-man-show-310), and The Arabian Nights (http://brothermarc7theatre.tumblr.com/post/50043755814/the-arabian-nights-show-344). Each show has brought a unique gem of art to the Fresno community and I hope to see you at the theater for the exciting season.
My Friday evening in New York brought me on over to the Shubert Theater to take in a last minute score on a cancelled ticket for Matilda. This highly anticipated musical has come from winning multiple Olivier awards in London to grace Broadway with its presence. Although it did not sweep the Tony’s like many had anticipated; this was hands down my favorite show of the trip. Matilda rocks and there’s no doubt about it. Based off the Roald Dahl book which later became a movie, Matilda follows a young girl who’s family has zero appreciation for her, a school principal who is impossible to be around, and a group of friends, a teacher, and librarian who enjoy her company and contributions to society. Through scenes and songs telling the story of Matilda’s life at her elementary school we find just how brilliant and magical the power of knowledge and kindness can be for a human. A tender story that transfers very well on the stage.

Bailey Ryon was the one of the four Matildas that I saw perform. Ryon was perfectly adorable and grounded in the title role, and she owned the part from her first step and note on stage, Dahl’s story, adapted by Tony winner Dennis Kelly, has so much depth and maturity that playing the title part is not a walk in the park. Ryon was poised, believable and nuanced beyond belief that hilarity and poignant deliveries were nailed like a seasoned actor. Bravo to this young lady.’

(L to R: Gabriel Ebert (Mr. Wormwood), Bailey Ryon (Matilda), Lauren Ward (Miss Honey); Photo Source: www.totaltheater.com)

Gabriel Ebert (Mr. Wormwood) and Lesli Margherita (Mrs. Wormwood) have mastered the art of physical humor and spot on punch line delivery. Both were standouts as the deliciously cynical and insulting parents. Margherita was fantastic in her Act 1 number, “Loud.” Her belting power and dancing was something to be enjoyed. Bertie Carvel (Miss Trunchbull) was creepily wonderful every time he oozed on stage. His presence alone made me scared to be sent to the principal’s office. His physical nuance as the horrid school master was every bit creepy as it was genius. “The Hammer,” and “The Smell of Rebellion” were so-so numbers to highlight this talented performer. It was Carvel’s scene work that really made him standout in this role.

(Bertie Carvel (Trunchbull) and Lauren Ward (Miss Honey); Photo Credit: www.matildaonbroadway.com)

Lauren Ward (Miss Honey) gives the audience an endearing presence and displays one of the best arcs in the show. Her Sondheim-esque soliloquy “Pathetic” was a true acting transition for the sweet teacher. The kids in the ensemble were great in all accounts, and were a very in-sync chorus along with the older kids. They executed Peter Darling’s amazing and imaginative choreography with insane enthusiasm and precision. Why it did not win the Best Choreography Tony Award I will never know. Numbers such as “Miracle,” “School Song,” “Loud,” and “Revolting Children” were stunning beyond words. To have witnessed inspiring choreography like that is something you don’t see as much these days in the theatre.

Overall, Dennis Kelly, Tim Minchin (music) and Matthew Warchus (director) created an animated musical that does not lack depth. It involves some eye-popping tech aspects; much praise going to Hugh Vanstone’s lighting design. Rob Howell’s ingenious set was utilized in all sorts of fun ways; whether it was a gate with alphabet blocks being placed in it; or rolling desks that served as little stages for the kids to rock out on. Do yourself a huge favor and go see this show. Tickets are hard to come by and the lottery is packed so plan ahead and make your reservations to see this spectacular musical. Go see this show!

My third show in New York led me to the Lyceum Theater to see Nathan Lane and company perform The Nance. What was produced on that stage was not just a exposition of what the 1930’s was like for a homosexual actor trying to stay out jail; but was a poignant script that shows the growth of American theatre and the “supposed” tolerance we are to be growing in with people of all sexualities. The Nance hits the mark every second it is on that beautiful stage.

The Nance follows the story of Chauncey (Nathan Lane) and his affair with young buck Ned. After a happenstance meeting in a gay Automat; the two quickly go down a road of affection that neither intended on. Chauncey is a burlesque performer along with Efram (Lewis J. Stadlen), and the three beauties Sylvie, Joan, and Carmen (Cady Huffman, Jenni Barber, and Andrea Burns, respectively). The six of these actors put on scene after humorous scene on stage at the Irving Place Theater; but quite a different “show” outside of the four walls. In a time where an actor could be arrested, and his theater of employment could be shut down if word got out that he was a “pansy” as they call it; the cast struggles to accept Chauncey’s way of life. Douglas Carter Beane’s script is a well-written, comical but tragically real piece that was put into the right hands of Jack O’ Brien (director), Joey Pizzi (choreographer), and company to display for Broadway audiences.

The three girls are beautifully staged and costumed; (Ann Roth, won the Tony for her work) allowing them to hold their own during the shtick numbers, the dance numbers, and especially in the tell-all dramatic scenes that occur in Chauncey’s apartment and backstage at the Irving. Huffman especially shines in her scene work opposite her co-stars in Act 2 as Chauncey’s future, both romantically and professionally, are at huge risks of being eliminated.

(L to R: Lewis J. Stadlen (Efram), Cady Huffman (Sylvie), Nathan Lane (Chauncey), Johnny Orsini (Ned); Photo Credit: www.newyork.com)

Orsini comes off a bit forced and phony in his commitment to the seasoned one-night stand love life of Chauncey. When Orsini hit his stride in the burlesque numbers he was fabulous to watch. However, it was when the mood shifted to needing a connection with Chauncey that I felt he was just proving to the audience he was off-book rather than motivating his choices.

Stadlen steals the show whether it’s his great physical comedy and strong talent for the shtick one-liner punches, or when he really gets in Chauncey’s face with some hard life lessons; Stadlen leaves his mark on the Lyceum stage with true showmanship and a life-long memorable performance that should have garnered a Tony nod. His versatility to emote and show his seasoned understanding of the character was true form of the acting art.

(Nathan Lane (Chauncey) and Lewis J. Stadlen (Efram); Photo Credit: www.broadwaysbestshows.com)

Finally, we get to our leading man in Nathan Lane. Easily labeled as a perfect casting choice; Lane displays a phenomenal range of acting and emotions throughout the evening. He remains harshly believable scene after scene, and number after number. Furthermore, all that leads up to his act 2 blow-up was beautifully dramatic to watch. He and Stadlen make for a studly pair; nailing the burlesque skits and songs with proper Vaudevillian flair.

O’Brien’s powerful directorial choices in which he utilizes John Lee Beatty’s set (Beatty won a Tony for his work) well. He makes no apologies about having Lane shout the convicting messages Beane has to share with us. The dramatic speeches arc up to one of the most powerful endings to a play I have ever witnessed. Make sure you hustle and say “hi, just hi” to the cast and crew of The Nance. You may think that the theatre has always been a place where the odd-ducks and confused artists can go to hide or express themselves? This play shows that there was a time where that thought was 100% false. This play will make you feel all the feelings, and will absolutely challenge you theatrical perceptions. Go see this show!

Musical Monday

Happy Musical Monday! I am glad to be back from New York; it was a complete blast. This week I am late in honoring this musical because of my Tony edition Musical Mondays the past several weeks. This is a show that I have been very involved with over the past few years whether it be as a cast member, production staff, or audience member. So without further ado let’s enjoy the tradition this musical holds dear. Lachaim!

So there is some Jewish tradition for you. Having the pleasure of performing, choreographing, and seeing several productions of this musical I can safely say it is one of my favorite classics. If Fiddler… is playing near you make sure to stop by Anatevka and check it out. The message is timeless and the music is gorgeous. Go see a show!

"Lucky Guy" show #348

George C. Wolfe has breathed a beautiful air into Nora Ephron’s work, Lucky Guy. The Broadhurst Theater has a passionate piece of theatre on it stage. Big names aren’t the only reason either. Now, the names like Hanks, McDonald, and Vance absolutely drive this work through a successful night; however, the ensemble of actors supporting them are just as glorious to watch.

Lucky Guy is an exposition of the New York tabloid columnists and paper contributors in the 80’s and 90’s. The central character is Mike McAlary (Tom Hanks) and his roller coaster career. Themes shown are greed, alcoholism, power, and success/failure. Ephron has written a piece that is seamless between the narration that the company interjects with, and the scenes between the cast. What I walked away with is an outrageously enjoyable play that exposed the 360* view of what a New York columnists’ life was like.

Tom Hanks and Courtney B, Vance (Hap Hairston) did a stellar acting job during the show. Matched with poignant staging by Wolfe, these two men had gorgeous moments together, and solo on stage. Hanks nailed the subtleties and nuance based on his character’s arc through the 13 years this play covers. Whether it be the slick, fast-talking McAlary in the beginning of promotion time, or the elongated impediment he faces post-accident, Hanks made it clear he is an effective actor on a stage. Vance, without a doubt, earned every bit of the Tony Award he earned for his featured role work. His delivery and presence against Hanks, and against his cast was a standout performance that earned every sound of applause.

(Tom Hanks (McAlary) and Courtney B. Vance (Hairston); Photo Credit: Joan Marcus/Boneau/Bryan-Brown via Bloomberg)

Christopher McDonald (Eddie Hayes) also gives a memorable turn as McAlary’s lawyer. He stands strong through the piece with such ease and finesse it drew me into his scene work every time he walked on stage. Julie Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer created a very creative lighting design along with David Rockwell’s inventive set. These specific technical aspects elevated the show to a standard that engulfed me into the world of the New York journalist. This show is a limited run so do not delay; go see this show!

George C.
The first show I saw for my New York trip this time was Kinky Boots. The Wednesday matinee brought a sold out crowd to the Al Hirschfield theater, and I was fortunate enough to be a part of it. This had been one of the most hyped musicals to hit Broadway this season. With a book by Harvey Fierstein and score by Cyndi Lauper (Lauper would take home the Tony for her work) how could you go wrong? Well, you don’t. This was a remarkable show to watch and it earned every bit of that Best Musical Tony award for the 2013 season.

Kinky Boots has a very basic plot that dives deeper into its main characters. Charlie (Stark Sands) has taken over his recently deceased father’s shoe factory. However, sooner than later it fails and is victim to a few returned orders, resulting in an inevitable closing. However, Lola (Billy Porter, who won the Best Actor in a Musical Tony award for his work) comes to the rescue by teaming up to create a drag queen shoe that is built for a man’s weight but still gorgeous for runway and shows. With a multi-generation factory worker ensemble mixed with Lola’s Angels, every person on stage has a busy part in creating the ambiance of a small town hero story that pulls at the audience’s heart.

(Annaleigh Ashford (Lauren) and Stark Sands (Charlie); Photo Credit: Washington Post, Matthew Murphy)

Annaleigh Ashford (Lauren) pays a great tribute to what is clearly the Cyndi Lauper-esque role in the show. Ashford really only has one song to shine with “The History of Wrong Guys” and she nails it big time. Her character arc, though small, is clearly evident form this song on through the rest of the show where she ends up confessing her love for Charlie. Daniel Stewart Sherman (Don) is a featured stand out as the ignorant shoe factory worker who refuses (until a boxing match shows him a new way of thinking) to accept Lola as her/himself. His character is one of the strongest written among Fierstein’s book.

Stark Sands (Charlie). Wow. A leading man extraordinaire. He develops through his character at a fantastic pace with believability all show long. His act 2 breakout song was one of the most uplifting moments of theatre I have ever experienced. He has just shot himself in the foot by becoming a dictator sort of boss to his employees that has led them to walk out. The whole scene leading up to the song, “Soul of a Man,” you’re just waiting and waiting for him to actually blow up at the employees. But he doesn’t. He degrades them? Yes. He insults and belittles their work? Yes. But never really raises his voice. But then, as if it was like REAL LIFE, Sands blows up at himself with his song. It was the pinnacle of his performance as he gorgeously belted out that epic tune.

(Billy Porter (Lola) and the Angels; Photo Credit: www.npr.org, Jeff Lunden)

Billy Porter (Lola) did not disappoint as our other leading man. His soulful voice and exposing of vulnerability in “Not My Father’s Son,” and especially in “Hold Me in Your Heart,” are poignant twinkles in this show. He utilizes Lauper’s tender side of her; otherwise, elctrifying score very well. Porter doesn’t just sing his way through the piece though. His dancing and one-line deliveries were as enjoyable as could be. What Porter leaves on stage is a charismatic and real character in Lola that reads well across the fourth wall.

My only qualm with Kinky Boots was the choreography and how darn simple it was. Other than the Act 1 treadmill-ography in “Everybody Say Yeah,” I was visually bored with Jerry Mitchell’s choreography. What makes it worse is that it actually won the Tony for Best Choreography. Oh well… However, the rest of the show is a benchmark for the Broadway theatre. Lauper and Fierstein have created something that I realized is lacking in most modern day musicals, and the majority of classics. Correct motivation. Every song that every character sings makes perfect sense. It makes sense to the story; and it makes sense for the specific character to sing. It was so fulfilling as an audience member to see that in a musical. Framed by gorgeous costumes (Gregg Barnes) and an even better set (David Rockwell), Jerry Mitchell (director/choreographer) and company have put on amazingly fun and rocking show. So you know the phrase; go see this show!

Tony Awards Round-Up

For those of you have been following the two months worth of Musical Mondays, you now know how invested I am in the Tony Awards this year. Because my New York trip happened to encompass the Tony Awards I was especially excited because I knew that I could be seeing shows the week prior to them possibly the coveted award. I had the pleasure not only of seeing this year’s Best Musical (Kinky Boots) and this year’s Best Play (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike); but I was able to score tickets to actually attend the Tony Awards! It was such an amazing experience which then led me to do a short write-up of the experience and my thoughts.

First off, the energy of the performances is clearly evident and intoxicating when you’re watching them in person. Neil Patrick Harris and company did a phenomenal job keep the show running smoothly and in an entertaining fashion. Prior to the nationally televised section, the audience enjoyed a pre-awards show hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Jane Krasowski. The Special Tony honorees made their speeches during this time. Some were quite long-winded while others were quick and to the point.

Of the Tony Awards themselves there were only two categories in which I completely disagreed with the awarding decisions. Kinky Boots was given the Tony for Best Choreography. At this point I have seen 11 Broadway musicals, and the other 10 all had more complicated choreography than Kinky Boots. The most intriguing part of Kinky Boots’ choreography was the treadmill-ography that was performed in their Tony performance. Also, Cinderella was awarded Best Costume Design of a Musical. Although the gown tricks for Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother’s on-stage changes were fantastic to watch, at the end of the day they were just pretty gowns and tuxedos. Kinky Boots’ costumes were drag fabulous, and very period-appropriate. However, I am not on the committee so I can only give my opinion.

Overall, the experience was one that I will remember for a lifetime. So much was had, and seeing the awards show in person at Radio City Music Hall was nothing short of a blessing. Now go see the performances if you have not already, and then go see a show!

PHOTO OF THE DAY

My final day of the NYC 2013: Take 2 trip brought me an unexpected trip to the Cook County Jail to see Adam Pascal (Billy Flynn) and Amy Spanger (Roxie) in Chicago; as well as attending the 67th Annual Tony Awards!! Bottom Left are all the playbills of the shows I had the blessing to see this week. Until next time NYC!

PHOTO OF THE DAY

Saw Cinderella last night and it was quite beautiful. Then, I had the fortune to meet Laura Osnes after. Fantastic evening of theatre!

PHOTO OF THE DAY

After a long day of rushes, lines and rain I ended up benefiting from waiting in the ticket cancellation line to see Matilda. I can see why it is up for multiple Tony awards! Left, the Friday cast list of the kids performing that night; Right, Bertie Carvel (Ms. Trunchbul) who won the Olivier award for this role and is nominated for a Tony, and I hanging out at the stage door.

PHOTO OF THE DAY

Yesterday proved to be one of the most exciting days in my New York experience. Top Left, me after having won two tickets from the Tony Award ticket lottery (ill be there Sunday night, suit and all at Radio City Music Hall); Bottom Left, I saw the Tony nominated play “The Nance” starring Nathan Lane and it was great in all aspects; Right, ran into Justin Paul (of Pasek and Paul) in the subway waiting to head home. Amazing day and can’t wait for more!!!

PHOTO OF THE DAY!

First day of my “New York City 2013: Take 2” trip was fabulous on several accounts. Started off with seeing the Tony-nominated shows of Kinky Boots (right) and Lucky Guy (left). I had the fortunate luck to meet several of the cast members at the stage door after, including Billy Porter, Stark Sands, Annaleigh Ashford, Christopher McDonald and Tom Hanks. Such a great start to this week of NY theatre!

Musical Monday: Tony Awards Edition

This week closes out my Tony Award highlights for the musicals of this year. Upon my return from my trip, I will review and highlight the other shows I saw that weren’t part of the Tony Award Musical Monday series. But for now go bet your bottom dollar and learn a little bit about this treasured musical!

Musical Monday date: 6/3/2013

Musical: Annie

Book, Music, and Lyrics: Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse, and Martin Charnin

Nominations: Best Revival of a Musical

Also: Originally ran on Broadway from April 21, 1977 - January 2, 1983 where it won 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Fun Fact: Stars such as Andrea McArdle, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sutton Foster, and currently Jane Lynch have been in Broadway productions of Annie.

Venue: Palace Theater

So there is the final musical coverage for you to enjoy. I have highlighted Annie before, so refer to that Musical Monday for more information. I am off to Washington D.C. and then New York TODAY!!!! I can’t wait to see all the wonderful theatre and sights; and then return and brag all about them! Until take care. Regular posts will start up again next Wednesday. Photos of the day will start up this coming Thursday. Take care and go see a show!

"Love Letters" show #346

Good Company Players is currently in their run of Love Letters, a two person tale told entirely through the letters a “couple” writes to each other over a 50-year period. Following the traditional casting, there have been four sets of casts performing this show. This past Sunday matinee I was fortunate enough to see Peter Allwine (Andy) and Danielle Jorn (Melissa) take on this lovingly tragic story; and was undoubtedly shaken by the performance. An astounding script was given to two very capable actors.

What makes Love Letters such a catch of a show is that it is performed with the two actors sitting, reading the letters to each other. It leaves very little room for an actor to be lazy or become disconnected with the material. On the positive hand, it gives a wide range of room for the actors and director (Karan Johnson) to focus on nuance, vocal inflections, facial expressions, and, in the case of Johnson’s production, the power of silence.

Allwine delivers some moving monologues that are spoken with such passion that the audience is able to picture his words with ease. The ending Act 1 monologue letter to Melissa as to why the letter is more powerful and long lasting than the telephone was one of the best written and best delivered monologues I have ever encountered. Allwine is able to turn his (intentionally) long-winded letters into poetry, and pieces of art at times.

Jorn gets the one-liner award. Melissa is written to be such an “emotions on a sleeve” character, and Jorn is confided to a chair for 99% of the show. I loved how at the top of the show she was swinging her legs under the table, already giving us the impression that she is a little girl writing notes to the cute boy in class. Jorn provides the audience with a beautiful arch filled with happiness, ego, ambition, and turmoil. Jorn hits the jokes when needed, and gives some daunting facial looks that made me shiver. The chemistry between the two was undeniable; and therefore, made this a more than enjoyable afternoon at the theater.

You can catch Allwine and Jorn for one more weekend; at which point Chris Carsten and Amalie Larsen will take on the roles for the remaining two weeks. Please go see this gorgeous production while you still can. It is one that is not to be missed. Go see this show!

Musical Monday: Tony Awards Edition

This week’s Musical Monday highlights the second show up for Best Revival of a Musical. It is a timeless classic story that has received one of the all-star teams to score/write it, and has been modernized for today’s audience. Tony Awards are just around the corner so enjoy this week’s insight into of Disney’s best stories which is now on Broadway.

Musical Monday date: 5/27/2013

Musical: Cinderella

Book, Music, and Lyrics: Douglas Carter Beane and Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rogers, and Oscar Hammerstein II and Douglas Carter Beane and David Chase

Nominations: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Santino Fontana), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Laura Osnes), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Victoria Clark), Best Orchestrations, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical

Also: This actual version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is actually its first incarnation on a Broadway stage. However, in 1855 the original production of Cinderella was staged, and it was in the Broadway Theater (same venue as it is now).

Fun Fact: Cinderella has been made into all sorts of films; but the first being the 1950 Disney film which was nominated for 3 Oscars.

Venue: Broadway Theater

So there is some princess action for you to help you get through the week. I can not wait to see this musical and tell everyone about it! If you are in the NYC area this is definitely a quality show that is family friendly so go check it out. Stay tuned for the final Revival nominee highlight next Monday; and then I am back in NYC for the week leading up to the Tony’s. We shall see what the results say. Go see a show!

"Rock of Ages" show #345

This past week I attended Las Vegas and, of course, had to see another staging of Rock of Ages! What I have to say about this version of Rock of Ages is that if you are truly looking for a Vegas show that has energy and a party atmosphere; this production fits the bill. If you are looking for a musical theatre production, what you will receive is a diluted jukebox musical that still carries the same fun, good time that this show has a reputation for having!

Rock of Ages, if you haven’t noticed, is my guilty pleasure musical. We meet Drew on his road to wanna-be rock stardom, and Sherrie. Sherrie comes to LA in hopes of becoming a movie star. They both end up meeting and working for Dennis Dupree’s Bourbon Room along with narrator/sound guru Lonny. Through a very thin but easy-to-follow plot, the Bourbon Room faces a closing due to Franz and Hertz (German father and son duo) coming in and convincing the mayor of LA that the city should be rid of the rock n’ roll way of life. However, Stacee Jaxx comes to the “rescue” the Bourbon Room and plays his final gig with his soon to be ex-band to help raise an adequate tax revenue. Through some of the best 80’s iconic music and various love stories between Franz and hippie Regina, Sherrie and Drew, and a budding bromance of Dennis and Lonny, the Bouron Room gets another chance to have rock! This production has all the right ingredients for an amazing rock experience.

Carrie St. Louis (Sherrie) and Justin Mortelliti (Drew) do a top-notch job leading this high energy company to rockin’ goodness. Sherrie’s vocals in “Harden My Heart” were especially soaring. Mortelliti brings his edgy voice to enjoyable fruition in “I Wanna Rock” and “Here I Go Again.” What I enjoyed most; though, was the happy-go lucky chemistry these two shared, even during the “dramatic” scenes. They had these characters nailed, and it was obvious during their scenework.

The fabulous duo of Dennis (Troy Burgess) and Lonny (Mark Shunock) did not disappoint. Shunock was an outstanding narrator for the audience to follow this journey with, and nailed the Lonny bits that the script demands of this role. He and Burgess teamed up for an endearing “Can’t Fight This Feeling.” Kyle Lowder (Stacee Jaxx) was the vocal highlight for me in “Dead or Alive.” His flambouyant rock star performance was a show-stopping perofrmance every time he sang.

Not to be forgotten, the supporting roles of Franz (Kevin Heggman) and Justice (Markesha McCoy) were fantastic. Heggman’s time to shine with “Hit Me With YOur Best Shot,” was brilliantly executed and by far a fan favorite. McCoy delievered her soulful chops in a tender “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn.”

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas; but lucky for the world Rock of Ages is not limited just to Vegas audiences. However, the Vegas production is a very unique experience in that it is shorter (a lot of the songs have been cut short, especially with the dance and instrumental breaks). Plus, the atmosphere just screams rock. So if you have an extra two hours in Vegas, make sure you run over to the Venetian and check out this show! It’s nothin’ but a good time, so go see this show!

Musical Monday: Tony Awards Edition

This marks the first week of highlighting the musicals that are up for the Best Revival category. This is one of Stephen Schwartz’s most coveted of scores, and it has come back to Broadway this season. With a high-flying circus mentality, the reviews and reactions from fans have been soaring in favor. So here is a sneak peek into this week’s Musical Monday highlight!

Venue: Music Box Theater

Pippin is one of the shows I am fully intending on seeing in my trip to NYC in a few weeks. Having never seen this show I am ecstatic to know that this production could be my first experience ever with Pippin. If in NYC, I highly suggest you see this well-received piece of theatre. Go see a show!

Musical Monday: Tony Awards Edition

This week’s Musical Monday highlight is the final one of the Best New Musical category. Next week I will switch over to the Best Revival of a Musical category. However, I have saved this timeless classic for last for a reason. I read the book years ago, saw the movie multiple times as a kid (who didn’t if you are a 90’s kid?). So without further withholding of information, here is this week’s Tony Award version of Musical Monday!

Musical Monday date: 5/13/2013

Musical: Matilda

Book, Music, and Lyrics: Dennis Kelly, Tim Minchin, and Tim Minchin

Broadway Run: April 11, 2013 - Present

Nominations: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score for the Theatre, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Bertie Carvel), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Gabriel Ebert), Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Lauren Ward), Best Choreography (Peter Darling), Best Direction of a Musical (Matthew Warchus), Best Orchestrations, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Costume Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical

Also: Is based off the 1996 movie starring Mara Wilson (Matilda), Danny DeVito (Mr. Wormwood), Rhea Periman (Mrs. Wormwood), and Pam Ferris (Trunchbull)

Venue: Shubert Theater

As of now this is the only musical that is sold out when I am travelling to NYC next month. There is a lottery so I am hoping that the theatre gods will smile upon me and allow me to see this well-reviewed, and obviously well-selling show. If you are able to catch Matilda then I suggest you go see it and enjoy the story! Go see a show!

"The Arabian Nights" show #344

This past Tuesday I took in the first performance of the final week of Fresno State’s season concluding play, The Arabian Nights. Director/Choreographer Ruth Griffin has taken Mary Zimmerman’s script and sculpted a finely crafted ensemble piece led incredibly by some strong actors. To see The Arabian Nights at Fresno State will not only be an invigorating experience for you, but will redefine what it means to present an ensemble piece.

Griffin’s use of her 16 person cast airs on the side of inspired staging and nuanced vision. Accompanied with a superior lighting design (Madi Spate) that differentiates Jeff Hunter’s unit set design of carpets and back drops of a palace; the cast has a great technical foundation to tell stories within a story. The collection of Zimmerman’s tales of marriages, madmen, and a man remembered only for his gas (yes, that kind of gas) is energetically told through dialogue, physicality, dance, and most of all, by the most committed cast I have ever seen in at Fresno State.

Myles Bullock and KIa Vassiliades are the reason for the stories. When Bullock (Shahryar) spares Vassiliades’ (Scheherezade) life in exchange for her story telling and sexual gratifications the audience is taken on a journey of story followed by story followed by story, and so on. However, these two strong presenced performers are worked in well among the rest of the ensemble. Bullock and Ryan Woods share a hilarious genie-topping-genie match in ‘The Wonderful Bag’ scene. Both gentleman emulate what it means to have comedic delivery flow with ease.

(Cast members of The Arabian Nights; Photo Credit: Mark Crosse/The Fresno Bee)

Dane Oliver shows off great physical acting as a Jester and the Third Sage as he falls in love by a destined tortoise (Vassiliades). Aubrianne Scott’s portrayal of the Jester’s Wife is a great display of how a simple look and facial expression can make a bit work to great success. Joel Young’s huge scene as the Madman was one of the strongest performed skits in the show. Young goes from being considered a “mad man” in an asylum to back tracking through, you guessed it, story, to show the audience how he was tempted, married wrongfully, and eventually how it all comes full circle.

Brianne Vogt (Sympathy the Learned) delivers one of the most intriguing scenes of the show. Her dialogue with the pronounced learned men of the area was humbling in that she literally took the clothes off their back; but more importantly spoke an unimaginable amount of information regarding all sorts of facts regarding Islam, and answering/asking riddles. A top-notch job goes straight to Vogt’s performance. I really enjoyed the musical styling of John Martin III and Maria Cazarez. Their music sprinkles the scenes with a touch of Arabian flare that aids in the suspension of disbelief; further catapulting the audience in the array of engaging story telling.

What I appreciated most about this production was that the staging and fluidity never grew tiresome to watch. It did not come off as repetitive, and through my eyes, seemed necessary for the cast to constantly be engaged. Even if they were sitting and watching the action I knew that no matter where my focus was I would be entertained. Bravo to Griffin, cast, and crew for a fabulous production. The Arabian Nights closes May 11th so hurry on over to Fresno State and take a ride on the tales this company has to tell you. Go see this show!

Season Announcement Wednesday

Hot off the recent press, there has been another 2013/2014 season officially announced. This one makes me particularly excited because now I know which national touring musicals I will have coming right into my backyard. Plus, it is a 4 show season filled with titles that I am either excited to see for the first time, or excited to revisit. So here it is; the 2013/2014 season of Broadway Fresno!

Shows/Dates: Million Dollar Quartet (November 19 - 20); Hello, Dolly (February 18, 2013- February 19, 2013); Wicked (April 2 - 13); Memphis (May 13 - 14)

Venue/Address: Saroyan Theater @ 730 M Street, Fresno, CA 93721

Description: Broadway Fresno is responsible for bringing the touring shows to the Fresno area. Patrons can enjoy an evening in downtown Fresno by sitting in on some great shows at the Saroyan Theater. Personally, I have seen Rent, Avenue Q, The Wizard of Oz, Legally Blonde, Spamalot, My Fair Lady, Young Frankenstein, and Rock Of Ages. What I enjoy about Broadway Fresno’s seasons are that they always have something for everybody. Then, for the nerdy theatre connoisseurs such as myself, they have seasons where they’re all good. Although I am extremely saddened that I was not able to see any of the shows they produced this past season, I am looking very forward to their 2013/2014 season. So join me at the Saroyan for some classics, some Tony winners, and in general, some fantastic musicals. Go see a show!
