Helloooooooo! Welcome to the spooky month of October. Halloween, fall, everything changes, except the chance to see fabulous musicals. This week’s highlight is a wonderful Sondheim piece that just doesn’t get the amount of credit it should. It is a difficult show to perfect, and I’m not sure anyone but the original casts can really ever capture the intensity involved with this piece. However, it’s still an amazing work and it is this week’s Musical Monday post. Enjoy!
Musical Monday date: 10/8/2012
Book, Music, and Lyrics: John Weldman, Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Sondheim
Broadway Run: April 22, 2004 - July 18, 2004
Awards Won: Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Michael Cerveris), Best Lighting Design, Best Direction of a Musical (Joe Mantello), Best Orchestrations/2004 Theatre World Award (Alexander Gemignani)/Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Lighting Design, Outstanding Sound Design
Other: Original cast of Assassins included heavy hitting names such as Victor Garber (John Wilkes Booth), Terrence Mann (Leon Czolgosz), Eddie Korbich (Giuseppe Zangara), Debra Monk (Sara Jane Moore), and Patrick Cassidy (Balladeer)
Fun Fact: Most of the 2004 cast will be doing a one night special engagement in New York in December of this year. Cast members confirmed to perform (as of now) include: Michael Cerveris, Neil Patrick Harris, Marc Kudisch, Alexander Gemignani, and Denis O’Hare
So if you’re in New York during the one-night stand of Assassins, go see it! (And then tell me all about it haha) It has been a big year of seeing Sondheim shows for the first time for me, and I have enjoyed each piece in their own way. This is a thought-provoking, relevant work and it deserves your ticket money and butt in the seat. Go see a show!
